Khaberni - A report issued by the World Meteorological Organization, today, Thursday, about the climate situation in the Arab region, states that last year was the hottest ever in the Arab region.
The report, prepared by the organization in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the League of Arab States, highlighted an acceleration in the warming rate over recent decades, accompanied by more intense heatwaves and droughts, in addition to heavy rainfall and storms.
The report pointed out that these climate threats intersect with ongoing social and economic challenges, such as conflicts, poverty, and population growth, underscoring the urgent need to build resilience, invest in risk reduction, and achieve water security.
The report clarified that the drought in 2024 intensified in North West Africa after six consecutive failed rainy seasons, particularly in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, while heavy rains and sudden floods caused deaths and destruction in arid countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
The report stated that extreme phenomena in 2024 affected nearly 3.8 million people and resulted in more than 300 deaths, most of which were due to heatwaves and floods.
