Khaberni - It seems that a simple habit, like drinking a glass of orange juice daily, can make a real difference in heart health.

A new study, published in the Journal of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, reveals that this natural drink not only nourishes the body with vitamins but also influences the activity of hundreds of genes that control inflammation, blood pressure, and the metabolism of fats and sugars.

◄ Changes gene expression for 1700 genes

To reach these findings, researchers followed an experiment involving twenty young men and women aged between 21 and 36 years, over two months. Each participant consumed half a liter of 100% natural orange juice daily, distributed in two doses, while avoiding any other citrus fruit.

Blood samples were analyzed before and after the experiment to monitor any biological changes.

The result was significant: the gene expression for about 1700 genes changed, wherein researchers noticed positive effects on genes responsible for:

• Reducing inflammation.

• Regulating blood pressure.

• The metabolism and transportation of fats (digestion of fats and their absorption to provide energy and structural components for the body).

• Controlling blood sugar levels.

◄ Effects differ according to body weight

The response was not uniform among everyone. Overweight individuals benefited from greater changes in genes related to fat metabolism, while those with normal weight saw clearer improvements in genes linked to inflammatory responses.

These differences show that the impact of orange juice can vary from one person to another, depending on individual health conditions and metabolic rates.

◄ Limitations and guidelines

Despite the encouraging results, researchers point out several limitations in the study, including the small number of participants, along with the absence of a control group. Therefore, the results cannot be considered final yet, and more extensive and accurate studies are needed.

Although orange juice has its benefits, it is high in sugar and low in fiber compared to whole fruit. Thus, nutrition experts emphasize the following:

● Prefer consuming the whole orange instead of juice.

● If you prefer to drink juice, it’s best to prepare it at home or in the form of a smoothie containing fiber.
