Khaberni - Dr. Pavel Koudinov, a sleep specialist, confirms that counting sheep does not speed up the process of falling asleep, but instead may increase internal stress and prevent the brain from reaching the required state of relaxation.
He explains, "The brain should be in a state of near-complete calm when trying to sleep, away from any strenuous mental activity. Being preoccupied with thoughts or counting, or trying to control the sleep process, all turn counting into a mental task that hinders relaxation and impedes sleep."
He points out that achieving healthy sleep requires a systematic approach, starting with maintaining a consistent routine for sleep and wake times, even during weekends, plus preparing the bedroom to be dark, quiet, and relatively cool.
He adds, "Waking up at the same time every day helps the brain adapt to a steady rhythm, which facilitates sleep later on. Taking a shower before sleep—whether with cold or warm water—is beneficial for some people, yet the most important factor is keeping the room temperature lower than usual, as this helps the body relax and fall asleep quickly."
Koudinov concludes by asserting that there are no magical and immediate ways to overcome sleep difficulties, and if insomnia becomes a chronic condition, it is essential to consult a specialist doctor.
