Khaberni - Ukrainian negotiators began talks in the United States on Sunday about the plan proposed by Washington to end the war with Russia, at a time when pressure on Kyiv is increasing both militarily and politically.
The meetings began while Moscow intensified its nocturnal strikes the past two nights on the Ukrainian capital and its surroundings, coupled with a political shakeup domestically after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed his office manager Andriy Yermak following a broad investigation into corruption.
The meeting was attended by Ukrainian negotiators led by the Secretary of the National Security Council, Rustom Amrov, and U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio accompanied by Steve Weticov, the Special Envoy, and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump.
At the beginning of the meeting, Rubio said that the talks "are not just centered on peace agreements. They are about defining a path for the future that ensures that Ukraine remains sovereign, independent, and prosperous."
For his part, Amrov said, "We are discussing the future of Ukraine and its security, preventing the repetition of aggression against it, its prosperity, and how to reconstruct it."
Washington presented a plan to end the conflict that started more than three years ago and is seeking to finalize it with the approval of Moscow and Kyiv.
The first draft of the 28-point proposal, drafted without any intervention from Ukraine's European allies, stipulated the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk region (east) and the United States' de facto recognition of the regions of Donetsk, Crimea, and Luhansk as Russian.
Following criticism from Kyiv and Europe, the United States amended the original draft, but the current version is still unclear.
The French Presidency announced that President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with Zelenskyy in Paris on Monday.
