Khaberni - Recent data revealed an increase in the number of divorce cases in Egypt by 3.1% last year, against a decrease in the number of marriage contracts by 2.5%, according to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.
The agency said: The annual bulletin of marriage and divorce statistics for 2024 showed that 936.73 thousand marriage contracts were recorded during 2024 compared to 961.2 thousand contracts in 2023, a decrease of 2.5%.
The agency clarified that the number of divorce cases last year reached 273.8 thousand cases, compared to 265.6 thousand cases during 2023, an increase of 3.1%.
The number of marriage contracts in urban areas was 395.2 thousand contracts during 2024, representing 42.2% of the total contracts, compared to 388.6 thousand contracts in 2023, an increase of 1.7%.
While the number of marriage contracts in rural areas was 541.5 thousand contracts in 2024, representing 57.8% of the total contracts, compared to 572.5 thousand contracts in 2023, a decrease of 5.4%.
Age of Marriage
According to the data, the highest marriage rate was recorded in the age group "25 - 30 years" for grooms, where the number of contracts was 384.1 thousand contracts representing 41% of the total, and the average age of the groom was 30.6 years in 2024.
For brides, the highest marriage rate was recorded in the age group "20 - 25 years" where the number of contracts was 349.1 thousand contracts representing 37.3% of the total contracts, and the average age of the bride was 25.2 years in 2024.
The highest marriage rate among those with a secondary education was also recorded for grooms, where the number of contracts was 369.6 thousand contracts representing 39.5%, while the highest marriage rate among females with a secondary education was recorded, where the number of contracts was 318.5 thousand contracts representing 34% of the total contracts.
Divorce in Urban Areas
According to the data, the total number of divorce cases in urban areas was 158.2 thousand cases during 2024, representing 57.8% of total divorce cases, compared to 150.4 thousand cases in 2023, an increase of 5.1%.
While the number of divorce cases in rural areas was 115.6 thousand cases in 2024, representing 42.2% of total divorce cases, compared to 115.1 thousand cases in 2023, an increase of 0.5%.
The highest divorce rate was in the age group "35 - 40 years" for divorcés, where the number of certificates was 47.3 thousand certificates representing 18.2%, while the lowest divorce rate was in the age group "18 - 20 years", where the number of certificates was 356 certificates representing 0.1%, and the average age of the divorcé was 40.8 years in 2024.
For divorcées, the highest divorce rate was in the age group "25 - 30 years", where the number of certificates was 45.6 thousand certificates representing 17.6%, while the lowest divorce rate was in the age group "75 years and older", where the number of certificates was 168 certificates representing 0.1%, and the average age of the divorcée was 34.6 years in 2024.
The highest divorce rate among those with a secondary education was also recorded for divorcés, where the number of certificates was 91.3 thousand certificates representing 35.2%, and for divorcées, the highest divorce rate among those with a secondary education was recorded, where the number of certificates was 85.8 thousand certificates representing 33.1%.
