Khaberni - The Parliamentary Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, during a meeting held on Sunday chaired by MP Ayman Abu Henieh, discussed its working mechanism and its plan for the upcoming phase.

Abu Henieh affirmed that the energy sector is a main pillar of national economic security, which requires adopting an approach based on planning, monitoring, and involving all relevant parties to ensure the enhancement of energy security and the improvement of services provided to citizens, in line with the requirements of comprehensive modernization and the directions of His Majesty the King concerning the development of the sector and improving its performance.

He pointed out that the committee will work according to a clear methodology that includes legislative and supervisory aspects, which ensures the monitoring of the energy and mineral resources files in the kingdom, and stimulates investment in this vital sector.

He confirmed that the committee will work in the spirit of partnership and integration with the government, the private sector, and experts, with the aim of developing the energy and mineral resources sector, enhancing its efficiency, and ensuring the achievement of the supreme national interest.

Abu Henieh and the committee members, MPs: Jamal Qamoh, Talal Al-Nsour, Rakim Abu Henieh, Nasim Al-Abadi, and Islam Al-Azazmeh, reviewed the most prominent bills referred to it, including the Gas Law Project for 2025, and the Law Project on ratifying the implementation agreement for the assessment, development, and exploitation of copper and associated minerals in the Abu Khashibah area between the Ministry of Energy and Wadi Araba Minerals Company.

The committee confirmed that it will hold a series of consultative meetings hosting the relevant entities, stakeholders, and experts before commencing the discussion of any bill, to ensure the drafting of legislations that enhance energy security and support investment in mining.

The committee approved a program that includes holding periodic meetings with related governmental and private entities, in addition to organizing field visits to the provinces and institutions related to the energy and mining sectors, aiming to closely understand the work reality and discuss the challenges and obstacles at field sites.

The committee pointed out that its plan for the upcoming phase will focus on achieving a set of goals, the most important of which are: enhancing energy security through ensuring diversification of sources and achieving sustainability of supply, developing electrical infrastructure to improve the efficiency of networks and their distribution, encouraging investment in renewable energy to increase its contribution in the national energy mix, exploiting mineral resources and activating manufacturing industries to increase added value, enhancing Jordan's position on the regional and international green hydrogen map, reviewing and updating legislation related to renewable energy, wind energy, and solar energy, and supporting small and medium projects in the renewable energy sector.

The committee discussed the importance of improving energy efficiency across different sectors, addressing electricity loss, enhancing regional cooperation in electric grid interconnection projects, especially in light of the new regional changes.

The committee confirmed that in its upcoming meetings it will discuss a number of files and topics, including: the comprehensive energy sector strategy for 2020–2030 and its implementation plan, renewable energy projects, natural resources, petroleum derivatives, the liquefied gas port project in Aqaba, developments in oil and oil shale prospecting, and the Risha Gas field.

It referred to the exploration of copper in Wadi Araba, legislations regulating mining, organizing the energy and minerals sector, the use of nuclear energy, opportunities for electrical interconnection with Syria and neighboring countries, enhancing the participation of the private sector, syndicates and research institutions in the energy transition, updating mining legislation to prevent the export of raw strategic ores, and discussing Jordan's strategy in green hydrogen and the agreements signed in this area.
