Khaberni - Turkish police arrested a young man from the city of Trabzon four months after he posted a short video on TikTok that included a clip of a song by the late singer Kazim Koyunoglu, in a strange incident that sparked widespread debate about intellectual property rights on social media.
The events began when a truck driver named Selim Kalva decided to record a one-minute video from the balcony of his home in the Ayasofya neighborhood and added the tune "Uy aha" composed by Koyunoglu 21 years ago for Trabzonspor club.
Kalva posted the clip on his personal account without obtaining official permission from the legal heirs of the artist.
Four months later, the late artist's brother filed a complaint with the public prosecutor alleging violations of literary and financial rights associated with the song, requesting compensation of 50,000 Turkish Lira.
For his part, Selim Kalva gave his statement at the police station explaining that he was not aware of copyright and authorship rights, emphasizing that the purpose of posting the video was to express his admiration for the singer and his support for the Trabzonspor club, and it did not have any commercial intent or malice.
Kalva said that his sharing was not intended to generate profit, adding: "I love Koyunoglu's songs and am proud of them, and I did not expect this to lead to a legal problem."
This incident highlights the legal challenges faced by social media users when using copyrighted artistic works, even if the sharing is meant to express personal admiration or artistic appreciation, reflecting the importance of awareness of intellectual property rights before any public sharing on digital platforms.
