Khaberni - Google is preparing to end support for its popular voice assistant, Google Assistant, on millions of devices around the world, after about nine years since its launch, as part of a gradual plan to replace it with its new artificial intelligence-based system, Gemini.

Google had launched its voice assistant in 2016 as a direct competitor to artificial intelligence shortcuts like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, before announcing last March its intention to integrate and develop it within the more advanced Gemini system, according to the British newspaper "The Sun".

According to a statement published by the company on its support pages, the classic version of Google Assistant will stop working on most mobile devices and will not be available for download on app stores later this year.

The statement added that the transition to Gemini will include: smartphones, tablets, as well as cars linked to phones via Android Auto, connected devices like speakers and smartwatches.

The company also clarified that it is working on providing a completely new experience for users of smart home devices such as speakers, screens, and TVs, supported by Gemini intelligence.

In October of last year, Google unveiled the Gemini Home AI service designed for smart home devices, confirming the launch of a new generation of smart speakers from Google Home during the spring of 2026.

In a new update published on the Android Auto support page, the company indicated that Gemini will replace Google Assistant on most mobile devices, explaining that users will be able to interact with the new system using natural voice commands, with the same functionality as the previous assistant but with broader capabilities.

Google confirmed that Google Assistant will remain available until March 2026, without specifying whether this date includes all devices or is limited to phones and cars only.

It is worth mentioning that Gemini was first launched in 2023 under the name Bard, before Google renamed it in early 2024 to become the official name for all its models supported by artificial intelligence and smart chat services.
