Gum disease is more common and severe in men why

Khaberni - Translation: Haider Madanat

Two out of every five adults in the United States over the age of 30 suffer from some degree of gum inflammation and surrounding tissue, with 60% of those over 65 experiencing it. It is noted that men suffer from this inflammation more frequently and severely compared to women.

Scientists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill identified a type of protein that enhances the activity of gum inflammation and the supporting tissues around the teeth in men, increasing the severity of the disease and contributing to subsequent tooth loss.

The scientists say in a report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, that analysis of 6200 samples from 3 studies showed that men have much higher levels of this protein in the fluid located between the tooth base and the gums. They say, in experiments on mice, it was found that males had higher levels of this protein than females, and inhibiting the activity of this protein showed a significant reduction in inflammation severity, laying the foundation for the possibility of developing treatments targeting the protein to prevent these inflammations.
