Khaberni - A new survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has shown that 72% of adults feel sleepy during the day, and that fatigue sometimes or often affects various aspects of their daily lives.

According to "Health Day", the survey revealed alarming signs of how much sleep deprivation impacts daily activities. Many reported that fatigue affects their mood, 60%, stress or anxiety levels, 53%, and work productivity 42%.

Gender differences in impact
The survey also showed differences between ages and genders. Women were more likely than men, 36% compared to 25%, to say that sleepiness affects their ability to manage household affairs. Adults aged between 25 and 34 years, 30%, and 35 to 44 years, 31%, were more likely to say that sleepiness impacts their relationships.

Boosting energy with caffeine
Furthermore, many adults try to boost their energy with quick solutions. More than half use caffeine, 56%, and nearly the same number take a nap, 46%, to continue their day.

Dr. Eric Olson, a professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, said: "Although consuming coffee or any caffeinated beverage is common for improving alertness, the continual reliance on caffeine for daytime bodily functions is a sign of the need for more sleep". He added that "the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends adults regularly sleep 7 hours or more every night". The American Academy of Sleep Medicine also issued a statement, confirming that sleepiness can harm health and general safety.

Warning signs of sleep deprivation
The statement said: "Excessive daytime sleepiness is a warning sign that requires medical attention".

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine lists several signs indicating the need to consult a doctor or sleep specialist, including:

Difficulty staying awake during routine activities.
Loud snoring or gasping during sleep.
Difficulty with memory or concentration.
Trouble falling or staying asleep.
Waking up without feeling refreshed.
