Khaberni - The Prisoner Media Office confirmed today, Monday, that the prisoner leader Abdullah Barghouti has been subjected to one of the harshest forms of physical and psychological torture inside the “Gilboa” prison since his arrest on March 5, 2003.
The office emphasized in a press statement that what Barghouti (53 years old) is subjected to constitutes a “slow execution attempt” targeting one of the most prominent leaders of the prisoner movement, which could lead to his martyrdom at any moment.
The statement clarified that the prison administration practices systematic and repeated attacks on prisoner Barghouti for more than 25 months, where the jailers storm his room day and night accompanied by dogs, and tell him they "missed beating him,” before securing him and three of them begin to brutally beat him with sticks, causing bleeding and deep wounds that prisoners are only able to treat with torn clothes and simple cleaning materials.
The statement pointed out that what is happening with Barghouti, who is sentenced to 67 life terms, represents a direct implementation of the threats of the Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to execute prisoners.
The General Assembly of the Knesset had approved, last Monday evening, in the first reading, a bill to execute Palestinian prisoners, and it was referred to the specialized parliamentary committee for voting in the second and third readings.
It was indicated that the prisoner leader suffers from severe fractures in the right arm elbow and palm for three months without any treatment, in addition to a fracture in the smallest finger of the left hand, a fracture in the last two ribs on the right side of the chest, and a tendon tear, in addition to losing about 35 kilograms of his weight due to starvation policies and poor food.
The Prisoner Media Office added that the "Gilboa" prison administration deliberately pours water on his body then shocks him with electricity during torture, in addition to placing him in a scabies-infested room, which led to the spread of boils on his body despite his attempts to sleep on the ground to avoid infection.
It was confirmed that Barghouti now suffers severe difficulty in moving his hands, one of which is almost completely paralyzed, while the occupation prison administration refrains from providing any treatment or even simple painkillers, and prevents human rights institutions from communicating with him.
It was referred that what prisoner Barghouti is subjected to falls within the framework of an open war targeting the leaders of the prisoner movement, and that the level of torture against him has exceeded punishment and reached a deliberate attempt to kill, necessitating urgent international intervention.
The office called on human rights and humanitarian institutions to assume their legal and moral responsibilities, and to take immediate action to pressure the occupation to stop the torture, provide necessary treatment for Barghouti, and hold those responsible for the crimes committed in “Gilboa” prison accountable, confirming that his life is in real danger.
Human rights organizations had warned of the danger of the proposed law for executing prisoners, noting that it applies retroactively, which opens the door to the execution of hundreds of prisoners who were arrested since October 7, 2023, alerting that the essence of the law is not deterrence but political revenge and the elimination of resistance symbols within the occupation prisons.
