Khaberni - The quiet town of Bayeux in the Normandy region of France witnessed an unprecedented crime, after investigations revealed that a mother had drowned her five-week-old daughter in the bathtub following a heated argument with the baby's father at night.
According to the public prosecutor, the 31-year-old mother confessed to the crime after fleeing the apartment on the night of November 14, before the police arrested her within minutes on the streets of the town, according to 'The Sun' in Britain.
Details of the night of the crime
According to preliminary information, a violent argument broke out between the couple on Friday evening, continuing into the early hours of Saturday. After the discussion escalated, the father left the apartment to "calm down," while the mother stayed at home with her daughter.
At that moment, according to the newspaper "ICI Normandie", the woman proceeded to drown the infant in the bathtub.
For his part, the prosecutor Joel Garigu said: "After the argument, the father went out to calm down.. then she killed her daughter."
The mother did not stop at the horrific act but sent a shocking text message to her partner informing him of what she had done, causing the father to rush back to the apartment, only to find that she had left.
The arrest and confession
Within about 10 minutes, the police managed to find the mother walking on one of Bayeux's streets, where she was immediately arrested.
The prosecution confirmed that she admitted to the crime as soon as she was interrogated.
Legal proceedings
The mother is scheduled to be placed in pre-trial detention pending her appearance before the judge, while the public prosecutor has announced the opening of a judicial investigation on the charge of murdering a minor under 15 years old.
If convicted, the mother faces a life sentence in prison, while the public prosecutor has asked for her immediate imprisonment pending the completion of the investigations.
