Khaberni - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced in a statement that an Israeli Merkava tank fired at its forces this Sunday morning in the south of the country.
The statement said that "heavy machine-gun fire was launched about five meters from the peacekeepers, who were able to leave safely after 30 minutes when the tank withdrew back into the Israeli military position."
The statement reported that no one was harmed.
For its part, the Israeli military announced on Sunday that it did not fire "deliberately" at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), believing that the UN soldiers were "suspects".
The military said in a statement: "Earlier (Sunday), two suspects were identified in the Al-Hammas area in southern Lebanon. The forces then fired warning shots... and after verification, it turned out that the suspects were UN soldiers who were patrolling the area," adding that the matter is "under investigation".
The United Nations peacekeeping forces said last October that an Israeli tank fired a shell towards them, and a drone dropped a bomb near one of their patrols.
