Kuwaiti caught promoting electronic gambling activities via Snapchat

Khaberni - The Cybercrime Department in the State of Kuwait was able to detain an individual promoting and engaging in electronic gambling activities contrary to the law through the “Snapchat” application.

The apprehension came after careful monitoring and continuous tracking of suspicious activity on one of the accounts on the application, which involved promoting external sites that conduct gambling activities and collecting money from followers in ways that breach Kuwaiti laws.

The department explained that the accused was exploiting the application to create the illusion of earning fictitious profits in exchange for transferring amounts through banking applications, then blocking the followers after receiving the money. Moreover, it became apparent from monitoring that he visited gambling halls and documented some alleged profits with the aim of creating the illusion of quick gains and promoting electronic gambling activities, in an attempt to deceive the followers and lure them into participating in illicit activities.

The thorough investigations and security coordination eventually identified the individual (previously unknown) after linking the information in his account to clues about his whereabouts using modern technical means. Following the issuance of the necessary legal permission, he was apprehended, and he admitted to engaging in the prohibited activity through the application.

He was then referred to the Public Prosecution for Media, Information and Publishing Affairs to take legal actions against him.

In conclusion, the Cybercrime Department affirmed that it will continue to monitor and pursue anyone using social media for illegal activities or actions that harm society and security.
