Khaberni - A French citizen discovered a treasure trove of gold valued at $800,000 while digging for a swimming pool in his garden, according to local officials.
The man reported the discovery to the local authorities, and the local council in the town of Nouvelle sur Son, located in eastern France, allowed him to keep the gold, as it was not extracted from an archaeological site.
A local newspaper reported that "five gold ingots and several coins" were found buried in plastic bags.
The police clarified that the gold was obtained legally and had been smelted about 15 to 20 years ago at a nearby refinery.
The municipality reported that the previous owner of the garden had died, and the reason for the gold's presence in the garden remains an unsolved mystery.
