Khaberni - The Karmouz area in the west of Alexandria, northern Egypt, witnessed a horrific family crime where the bodies of a 41-year-old woman and five of her children were found inside their home, while the sixth son failed to commit suicide and was arrested.
The events began on March 16 when the mother received a text message from her husband, who is working abroad and holds the nationality of an Arab country, stating that he divorced her and married another, and declared his refusal to provide any financial support for her or their children.
The shock led to poor psychological condition of the mother, which, according to the confession of the eldest son, prompted her to agree with him on "ending their lives altogether" to escape the suffering.
The mother went on to kill her five children (a 17-year-old young man, a 15-year-old young man, a 12-year-old girl, a 10-year-old girl, and an 8-year-old child) with various cut wounds.
According to the investigations, the eldest son carried out his role by killing his mother in accordance with their agreement, then tried to commit suicide by jumping from the rooftop of the building; however, the locals intervened and saved him at the last minute, and informed the police.
The investigative authorities in Karmouz Prosecution decided to detain the eldest son, who is unemployed, for 4 days pending investigations after he reenacted the crime last night before a security force, and the prosecution requested speeding up the criminal investigations about the circumstances and motives of the incident.
Dozens from the local community attended the funeral of the six victims after the funeral prayer at Al-Amri Mosque under security surveillance, and they were buried at Al-Amud cemetery.
The security authorities confirmed that the investigations are ongoing to verify all narratives, with the bodies being held at the morgue of Kom El-Deka for preparation of the final forensic report.
This incident is one of the most tragic family incidents in Alexandria recently, and highlights the risks of psychological and social pressures resulting from marital disputes and the lack of financial support.
