Why shouldnt you close the washing machine door after washing

Khaberni - Experts at AO.com (an online home appliance store) revealed that closing the washing machine door immediately after the wash cycle is one of the most common mistakes, although it seems to be an organized behavior.

They explained that this action leads to moisture being trapped inside the washing machine, which creates an ideal environment for the growth of mold and bacteria.

Gwenn Snook, a washing machine expert on the site, stated that the rubber seal of the washing machine door is one of the most susceptible areas for mold accumulation due to its ability to trap moisture, detergent residues, and fabric fibers. She added that its interior design keeps it wet for a long period, especially when the door is kept closed after washing.

She pointed out that one of the prominent signs of this problem is the emanation of a musty smell from the clothes after they are washed, or an unpleasant odor from the washing machine itself when opened, which often indicates the presence of accumulated mold.

To avoid this problem, Snook offered a series of practical tips, foremost among them is to leave the washing machine door and detergent drawer open after each wash cycle to allow moisture to escape and air to enter. She also emphasized the importance of regularly cleaning the rubber seal and the washing machine tub, as these areas are most prone to dirt and mold accumulation.

She also recommended regularly cleaning the detergent drawer and the washing machine filter, explaining that the unpleasant odors that appear even when the washing machine is empty are often sourced from these neglected parts.

In case of noticing signs of mold, it is advised to use white vinegar with a microfiber cloth to clean the seal, then run a hot wash cycle with the machine empty to remove the accumulated deposits inside the pipes and tub.

She also stressed the need to avoid overloading the washing machine, and not to leave wet clothes inside for extended periods, as this enhances the formation of a moist environment suitable for mold growth.

Snook concluded by affirming that adhering to these simple habits, such as good ventilation and regular cleaning, is sufficient to maintain the efficiency and cleanliness of the washing machine and to extend its operational life.
