Khaberni - Six informed sources told Reuters that the United States is preparing to establish a military presence at an airbase in Damascus, to assist in facilitating the implementation of a security agreement mediated by Washington between Syria and Israel.
The American plans to establish a presence in the Syrian capital, which have not been reported by any prior reports, indicate Syria's reordering of strategic relations with the United States following the fall of Iran’s ally Bashar al-Assad last year.
The base is close to parts of southern Syria that are expected to form a demilitarized zone under an agreement between Israel and Syria.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said on Tuesday that American President Donald Trump intends to meet Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shar' in the White House next Monday.
According to Levitt, Al-Shar's visit to the United States "is part of (Trump's) efforts for world peace."
Levitt added: "When the president was in the Middle East, he made a historic decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria to give it a real chance for peace, and I believe that (Washington) sees good progress on this front under the new Syrian leadership."
