Khaberni - A source in the occupation police told "Reuters" on Wednesday that the occupation authorities extended the detention of the former military prosecutor Major General Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi until Friday, as part of the investigations related to a leaked video showing soldiers assaulting a Palestinian prisoner during the war on Gaza.
The prosecutor's resignation amid the leak scandal
Tomer Yerushalmi had resigned last week after a criminal investigation was opened against her, as she admitted to consenting to the video leak in August 2024.
Media reports indicated that she briefly disappeared last Sunday before the authorities found her and detained her.
Details of the leaked video and ongoing investigations
The leaked video showed soldiers from the occupation army severely beating a Palestinian prisoner inside one of the prisons, causing him severe injuries including broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a torn rectum.
According to the military prosecution, indictments were issued against five reserve soldiers on charges of committing serious violations against the prisoner.
Right-wing outrage and intrusions into military complexes
The investigation sparked a wave of anger among the right-wing politicians in Tel Aviv, who condemned the investigation and considered it a targeting of the army.
Demonstrators also stormed two military complexes after investigators summoned a number of soldiers for questioning. A week after these intrusions, the video was leaked to Channel 12 in Hebrew, which intensified the public controversy.
Tomer Yerushalmi: Attempted to defend the military establishment
Tomer Yerushalmi stated in her testimony that she leaked the video in order to stop negative propaganda against the legal administration of the army, assuring that she was seeking to demonstrate the military institution's commitment to the rule of law.
Human rights organizations: Systematic violations against Palestinians
Human rights organizations have confirmed that detention centers under occupation have witnessed severe violations against Palestinians since the outbreak of the war on Gaza, while the occupation army claims it is investigating dozens of cases and denies that the violations are systematic.
