Khaberni - On Wednesday, the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attacked the newly elected Muslim mayor of New York City, Zehran Mumdani, and called for the city's Jews to emigrate to Israel.

On Wednesday, Democratic Socialist Mumdani (34 years old) won the New York City mayoral election, becoming the first Muslim to hold the office in the city with the largest Jewish community in the world.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed concern about Mumdani's victory in the New York City mayoralty, claiming indifference to Israel haters, in his words.

Ben Gvir said in a statement published by "Israel Hayom" "The election of Zehran Mumdani as Mayor of New York will forever remind how anti-Semitism triumphed over common sense," according to him.

Israeli Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli also claimed that the city, once a symbol of global freedom, has handed its keys to a "supporter of Hamas," referring to the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement.

He considered this a decisive turning point in the history of New York, saying "New York's choice (Mumdani) undermines the foundations of the city that provided freedom and opportunities for success to Jewish refugees since the late 19th century and has become a stronghold for the largest Jewish community in the world."

Chikli also claimed that New York will never be the same, especially for its Jewish community.

He added that New York is walking with open eyes towards the abyss into which London fell, in a reference to the election of Muslim Sadiq Khan as mayor of the British city.

Israel's delegate to the United Nations, Danny Danon, also criticized Mumdani.

He said, "Mumdani's provocative statements (unspecified) will not deter us; we will continue to strengthen our relationships with leaders of the Jewish community to ensure their security and well-being."

Danon stated "This is a new reality, this mayor has expressed a strong stance against Israel and its army, and has not backed down throughout the election campaign."

Mumdani's electoral victory came despite fierce attacks on his policies and Islamic roots by economic elites and conservative commentators in the media and by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mumdani enjoys broad and diverse support among voters, including Jews who reject the policies of the Israeli government and the genocide in Gaza.
