Khaberni - The new US customs duties on imports of medium and heavy trucks and buses came into effect today, Saturday.

The new duties include imposing a 25% tax on trucks, and 10% on buses, with a partial exemption granted for vehicles entering the country under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The duties were applied after an investigation conducted by President Donald Trump’s administration under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to assess the impact of these imports on national security.

The decision is part of the US administration's policy to use trade tools to promote domestic manufacturing and punish countries it considers to be benefiting unfairly from trade relations with the United States.

It is worth noting that other economic sectors in the United States have seen similar customs duties imposed, with steel and aluminum products subject to a 50% duty, while cars have been subjected to a 25% duty.

The White House clarified in a statement issued last October that the new duties on trucks will not accumulate on top of the existing duties related to steel, aluminum, copper, and wood, and that they will not be subject to additional "reciprocal" duties that vary according to the trade partner.
