Temporary suspension of flight operations at Berlin Airport after drone sighting

Khaberni - Berlin Airport suspended flight operations for two hours after detecting unidentified drones in its skies.

A spokesperson for the airport stated that air navigation was halted between 8:08 PM (19:08 GMT) and 9:58 PM, and a "complete series of flights" was diverted to other German cities during the closure. The spokesperson added, "We expect that the danger has been averted at this time."

The Brandenburg state police, where the airport is located, confirmed receiving a report of a drone sighting, indicating the deployment of patrol cars and a helicopter.

German leaders have repeatedly warned about the increasing threat of drones, after they were frequently spotted in the airspace of airports and sensitive military sites this year.

Recently, airports in Denmark, Norway, and Poland also suspended air navigation due to sightings of unknown drones and balloons.

In contrast, Germany, Romania, and Estonia have pointed fingers at Russia concerning the drones, while Moscow has denied these allegations.

Germany has recorded several drone flights in recent months over military bases, industrial sites, and other vital infrastructures.

In early October, drones were spotted twice over the city of Munich, leading to the closure of the city's airport and disrupting the flights of thousands of travelers.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called on Germany to "find new solutions to this threat," including enhancing its capacity to detect, assess, and potentially down drones.
