It silently affects women What is the prediabetes stage and its most prominent signs

Khaberni - Many women may not realize they are in the prediabetes stage because symptoms are generally mild and often unnoticed, but ignoring them can lead to the condition progressing to type 2 diabetes in a few years.

In this context, "El Konsulto" explains the symptoms of prediabetes for women, as reported by "Verywell Health".

What is the prediabetes stage for women?

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. It is identified by the A1C test which measures average blood glucose over the past three months:

-Normal: Less than 5.7%

-Prediabetes: Between 5.7% and 6.4%

-Diabetes: 6.5% or more.

Doctors confirm that more than 80% of those with prediabetes are unaware of their condition, making early screening essential especially for women who are more susceptible.

Symptoms of prediabetes specific to women

Although the symptoms of prediabetes are similar between the genders, women may experience additional signs due to hormonal changes and their impact on insulin, which include:

1-Recurrent vaginal yeast infections or urinary tract infections.

2-Menstrual irregularities such as heavy menstrual bleeding or extended periods.

3-Vaginal dryness or decreased libido.

4-Constant fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

5-Excessive thirst and frequent urination.

Research suggests that women who suffer from chronic stress are twice as likely to develop diabetes compared to others.

Groups of women most at risk for diabetes

1-Being overweight or obese, especially in the abdominal area.

2-Having polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

3-Having a family history of diabetes.
