Khaberni - US President Donald Trump announced that he will immediately end all trade discussions with Canada, accusing Ottawa of misusing quotes from former President Ronald Reagan in a misleading advertising campaign against tariffs.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "Based on their terrible behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are cancelled."
He added: "The Ronald Reagan Foundation just announced that Canada used an advertisement fraudulently and falsely showing Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs."
This sudden shift in the relationship between the two North American neighbors comes about two weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to the White House in an effort to reduce American tariffs.
The Ronald Reagan Foundation reported on X platform that the government of Ontario, Canada, selectively used audio and visual clips from a radio speech given by Reagan in April 1987.
It added that the advertisement "distorts" what the former Republican president had said in his speech about trade, noting that it is "reviewing its legal options in this matter."
Trump said that the advertisement was designed "to interfere with the decision of the US Supreme Court," which is scheduled to issue its ruling on his comprehensive international tariffs.
Although about 85 percent of goods are exempt from tariffs between the United States and Canada due to their commitment to the North American Free Trade Agreement, the international tariffs imposed by Trump on sectors such as steel, aluminum, and cars had a negative impact on Canadian companies and led to job losses.
