Khaberni - In a unique legal incident in Turkey, the Supreme Court ordered a man to pay his ex-wife both material and moral compensation after it was revealed that he had saved her number in his phone under the name "Tombik," which means "the fat one" in Turkish.
The case emerged during divorce proceedings in the city of "Uşak", where the wife asserted that this derogatory nickname caused her psychological harm and had a negative impact on their marital relationship, contributing to the breakdown of the marriage. She explained that discovering this nickname during court sessions was an insult to her and provoked deep negative emotions.
The court supported the wife's account and decided to hold the husband accountable, ordering him to pay her financial compensation. This case has now become a legal precedent in Turkey, implying that even simple actions like the nicknames saved in the phone can be considered proof of marital abuse.
According to "Haberler" newspaper, the ruling sparked widespread debate on social media platforms. Some considered the decision fair and showed respect for women's dignity, while others thought that the word "the fat one" could be used in a more endearing or spontaneous manner, without the intent to insult.
One commenter wrote: "Being fat is not a bad thing, and calling someone by this description doesn't necessarily mean an insult. It could be a cute nickname."
