Khaberni - Meta will launch new tools aimed at protecting Messenger and WhatsApp users from potential scams.
The company said that its teams "discovered and disabled" nearly 8 million accounts connected to scam centers in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, UAE, and the Philippines since the beginning of 2025.
The company also took action against more than 21,000 Facebook pages pretending to be customer support services for legitimate companies, according to a report by the technology news site Engadget, which "Al Arabiya Business" reviewed.
Despite these moves, there is still much to be done to eliminate scams, especially those targeting elderly people who may not be well-versed in technology or aware of the latest scammer schemes.
In WhatsApp, the company will start displaying warning notifications to users who attempt to share their screens with someone not listed in their contact list during a video call.
Sometimes, scammers force their victims to share their screens to steal sensitive information. In the warning window, Meta will explicitly inform users to share their screens only with people they trust, as they will be able to see everything on their phones, including their banking information.
The company is also testing advanced fraud detection tools in Messenger conversations on mobile phones.
When a user receives a message that may be fraudulent, a warning notice will appear informing them that the message is suspicious and that they can forward it to Meta for review by artificial intelligence.
If Meta detects any potential scam, it will display a list of common scam signs to the user, such as job offers for money, job offers promising quick earnings, and work-from-home job offers that cannot be done remotely.
Users will be reminded not to transfer money or send gift cards, which are very common methods used by scammers to steal money from their victims. At the bottom of the page, users will have the option to report and block the account that sent them the message.
Meta has not announced when the new Messenger warning tool will be widely released.
For now, the company encourages users to set up password verification for quick identity checks, conduct a security check to review their security settings and get recommendations, including updating their passwords.
