Khaberni - The Municipal Council in Kuwait approved the cancellation of street names and their conversion to numbers. The members adopted the minutes of the committee meeting to study proposals and requests for naming cities, suburbs, areas, streets, and squares, established by ministerial decision 558 in 2023, which decided to replace the names of 591 streets with numbers, change the names of 3 streets to cities and capitals of Arab countries, and maintain 66 names.
The Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, Abdul Latif Al-Mashari, issued a decision on August 14, deciding under it to replace articles 4 and 5 of ministerial decision number 507 of 2023, to be as follows:
Article 4:
1 - Titles of individuals may only be given to cities, suburbs, and areas if they have held the position of Emir or heir apparent in the State of Kuwait.
2 - Naming roads, streets, and squares after individuals shall be with names of rulers of the State of Kuwait, kings, sultans, governors, princes, and heads of friendly and sisterly states, as well as historical figures, and some sheikhs from the ruling family, as may also be named after countries, cities, and capitals according to the principle of reciprocal treatment.
3 - Some road, street, and square names that do not bear individual names will be maintained.
Article 5:
Other than the names of rulers of the State of Kuwait, kings, sultans, governors, princes, heads of friendly and sisterly states, historical figures, and some Sheikhs from the ruling family, and names of countries, cities, and capitals, as per the previous article, the practice of naming roads, streets, and squares will be halted, and a move towards their numbering will be adopted.
