Newspaper bin Salman seeks to sign a joint defense agreement with America

Khaberni - The Financial Times reported on Friday, citing informed sources, that Saudi Arabia is discussing a defense agreement with the administration of US President Donald Trump, as the kingdom hopes to reach an agreement when Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visits the White House next month.

A senior Trump administration official told the Financial Times that there are "discussions about finalizing something when the Crown Prince comes, but details are still under discussion."

The newspaper stated that the agreement under discussion is similar to the recent agreement between the United States and Qatar, which stipulates treating any armed attack on Qatar as a threat to the United States.

The agreement with Qatar came after Israel attempted last month to assassinate leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in an air raid on Doha.

The US State Department told the Financial Times that defense cooperation with the kingdom is "a strong cornerstone of our regional strategy," but declined to comment on the details of the potential agreement.

Last month, Saudi Arabia signed a joint defense agreement with nuclear-armed Pakistan.
