Khaberni - Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing to enter "La Santé" prison in Paris on October 21, to serve a 5-year prison sentence handed down to him in a case of illegal financing for his 2007 election campaign, according to French judicial sources.
Thus, Sarkozy (70 years old), who led France between 2007 and 2012, will become the first former president of an EU country to be actually imprisoned after being convicted of financial crimes.
The Paris court had sentenced Sarkozy to 5 years in prison on September 25, considering the acts attributed to him of "exceptional seriousness", after proving that he allowed his close associates to communicate with the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to obtain illicit funding for his presidential campaign.
Despite the appeal, the court issued a deferred enforcement arrest warrant, requiring him to enter prison with the possibility of arranging his personal affairs before the scheduled date.
Media reports confirmed that the choice of "La Santé" prison was for security reasons, as it is one of only two centers in Paris that includes a special protection section designated for public figures.
