Khaberni - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Sunday that one of its members was injured due to an Israeli drone dropping a bomb that exploded near a facility in the south, marking this as the third incident of its kind in just over a month.

UNIFIL is working with the Lebanese army to enforce a ceasefire reached last November aimed at ending more than a year of Israeli hostilities against Lebanon, which included a two-month open war.

UNIFIL stated in a statement released on Sunday, "Just before noon yesterday, an Israeli drone dropped a bomb that exploded near a UNIFIL site in the town of Kafar Kila, resulting in minor injuries to one of the peacekeepers, who received immediate first aid."

Earlier this month, UNIFIL announced that Israeli drones dropped four bombs near the peacekeeping force, while Israel emphasized at the time that there was no deliberate firing targeting the force.

UNIFIL noted that Saturday's incident "constitutes another serious violation of Resolution 1701 and is a concerning threat to the safety of peacekeeping forces."

Security Council Resolution 1701 ended a conflict that erupted in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah, and formed the basis of the ceasefire reached on November 27, 2024, between the parties.

The 2024 agreement, mediated by the United States, stipulated Hezbollah's withdrawal from the borders and dismantling of its military structure, and the confinement of arms to official Lebanese forces, with Israel withdrawing from points it had penetrated during the conflict. However, Israel retained forces in five strategic highlands and continued to launch strikes claiming to target elements and facilities of the party.

UNIFIL has called on the Israeli military "to cease all attacks on or near its soldiers" at a time "when they are working to enhance the stability committed to by both Israel and Lebanon."

UNIFIL has been deployed in Lebanon since 1978 and consists of about 10,000 members from nearly 50 countries.

The UN Security Council voted in August to end the UN force's mission in 2027.
