Spanish Parliament Approves Law Banning Arms Exports to Israel

Khaberni - On Wednesday, the Spanish Parliament approved a law banning the export of arms to Israel, a decision announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez last September aimed at putting an end to the genocide crimes committed by Israel, the occupying power, in the Gaza Strip.

The law was passed with a majority of 178 votes, against 169 opposing votes, and one abstention.

This ban prohibits the sale of arms to Israel and completely stops Spain's purchase of Israeli arms.

The Spanish government had already stopped buying or selling arms to Israel since the beginning of the war on October 7, 2023, but Sánchez announced last month a new decree aimed at "enshrining the ban in law" as part of a series of measures against the Israeli attack on Gaza.

The law bans all exports of defense equipment, products, and technologies to Israel, as well as the import of such materials from it. It also prohibits the transit of aviation fuel with potential military uses through Spanish territory and bans commercial advertisements for products coming from illegal colonies in Gaza and the West Bank.

This decision is part of an escalating official stance by the Spanish government and parliament towards the severe Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, where parliament members expressed their deep concern over the crimes committed against civilians, demanding the need to take practical measures to stop military and logistical support for any operations that might be used in committing violations of international law.
