Common Foods You Should Avoid Eating on an Empty Stomach

The stomach is usually very sensitive in the morning because its lining is delicate, and its acids function normally. Choosing the wrong foods when waking up can lead to stomach acidity, bloating, and even chronic digestive problems.

Although some staple morning foods are nutritious, they might not be the best choice on an empty stomach, according to the "Times of India."

Dr. Shubham Vatsya, a senior gastroenterology consultant in India, highlights these three main foods that can negatively impact gut health when consumed on an empty stomach in the morning:

  • Citrus fruits
    Citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C, known for its numerous health benefits, and fruits like oranges, grapefruits, and lemons are known for their antioxidant content. They boost immunity, fight free radicals, and help maintain healthy skin. However, consuming them on an empty stomach may do more harm than good.
  • It irritates the stomach lining due to the natural high acidity of citrus fruits, leading to heartburn and acid reflux, which directly affects the intestinal lining. It can cause severe pain in patients with acid sensitivity and gastritis. Another issue with citrus is that it disrupts the natural balance of the gut, hindering the digestive process in the afternoon.
  • Black coffee
    Coffee is the most popular morning drink worldwide and is an essential part of many people's lives. Almost everyone thinks they can't live without their morning coffee. However, consuming black coffee on an empty stomach can trigger a series of events that hinder digestion.
  • The coffee causes the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. When this acid is secreted without anything to digest, it irritates the stomach lining and causes a burning sensation. If it continues for a long time, it can lead to acid reflux and digestive disorders. Coffee also stimulates cortisol, the body’s stress hormone.

    Consuming a lot of cortisol in the morning can lead to hormonal imbalances, drowsiness in the afternoon, and even increased anxiety. Additionally, black coffee has a mild laxative effect, which can be bothersome when taken on an empty stomach.

  • Spicy foods
    Spicy foods may seem stimulating, but they're not a good idea on an empty stomach. Capsaicin, the chemical that gives chili its heat, intensely stimulates the digestive system, which can lead to stomach cramps, indigestion, or diarrhea in some individuals. Also, consuming spicy food right after waking up increases the risk of acid reflux, especially in people who easily get heartburn.
  • For those with sensitive stomachs or those suffering from gastritis, spicy food irritates the stomach lining and exacerbates symptoms. It's better to wait until later in the day to eat spicy food when the digestive system is more active and able to handle more stimuli.

Experts recommend eating moderate and alkaline foods for a healthy and happy gut throughout the day. Soaked almonds, bananas, and papaya provide the body with natural energy and support digestion. Experts also suggest starting with a cup of warm water, herbal tea, or oats as a good start for the digestive system.
