Study Light Activities Protect You from Alzheimers Disease

Khaberni -  A study concluded that engaging in activities such as reading, writing, or learning a new language can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by about 40%.

The British "Daily Mail" stated that the results of a new study showed that engaging in mentally stimulating activities and lifelong learning may not only reduce the risk of memory loss but may also delay the disease for more than 5 years.

Andrea Zammit, a neuropsychologist at the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center, who led the study, said: "Our study addressed cognitive nourishment from childhood to old age, focusing on activities and resources that stimulate the mind."

She pointed out that the study found that cognitive health in later life is heavily influenced by lifelong exposure to intellectually stimulating environments, and dementia, the most common type of Alzheimer's, remains one of the most pressing health challenges, with over 2500 deaths from this condition recorded in England last year.

There is currently no treatment for this condition, so prevention is essential to counter the devastating impact of this disease. The study, published in the Journal of Neurology of the American Academy of Neurology, included 1939 people in their eighties who do not suffer from dementia.

The participants were followed for about eight years, during which 551 people developed Alzheimer's, while 719 showed signs of mild cognitive impairment.

The researchers found that those who had the most lifelong learning, including reading and learning a foreign language, developed the disease 5 years later compared to those who did not have the same level of learning.
