Khaberni - A 6-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Java Island in Indonesia on Tuesday evening, causing a state of anxiety among the residents, with no confirmed reports of material damage.
The coast of Java Island, the most populous island in Indonesia, experienced a 6-magnitude earthquake on the evening of Tuesday, September 30, 2025, according to the US Geological Survey. The earthquake, which occurred at 23:49 local time (16:49 GMT), was detected approximately 150 kilometers east of the city of Surabaya, the second largest city in the country, and occurred at a depth of 13.9 kilometers below the surface.
The earthquake, which has not yet been reported to have caused any significant losses or damage, was felt by residents of several areas in eastern Java, particularly in the city of Sidoarjo, which had been experiencing ongoing rescue operations since Monday, following the collapse of an Islamic school that killed three people, with search efforts still ongoing to find dozens of people trapped under the rubble.
Up to this moment, it is unclear whether the earthquake had a direct impact on ongoing rescue efforts, at a time when some residents confirmed they felt clear shakes prompting them to immediately leave their homes and residential buildings.
In one of the hotels in the city of Sidoarjo, guests reported that they left their rooms as soon as they felt the tremor. Indah Eriyanti, 42 years old, told Agence France-Presse: "I was still awake and working when I noticed the lamp swinging suddenly," adding, "I felt scared and ran outside. I am still suffering from the trauma of earthquakes since I experienced a severe one several years ago in Jakarta."
Indonesia is located in the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean, which is one of the most active regions in terms of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This geographical location makes the country prone to frequent seismic activity, as it intersects with several active tectonic plates.
