Who is Nabil Fahmy the new SecretaryGeneral of the Arab League

Khaberni -  Arab foreign ministers agreed on Sunday to appoint former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the new Secretary-General of the Arab League, taking over from Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose second term concludes in June 2026.

Nabil Fahmy (75 years old), is an Egyptian diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from June 2013 to July 2014.

Born in New York at the beginning of 1951, he is the son of Ismail Fahmy, who led the Egyptian Foreign Ministry during Sadat's era (1973-1977). He was educated at the American University in Cairo, earning a bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1974, and a Master's in Management in 1976.
The new Secretary-General of the Arab League advanced in his diplomatic career within Egypt's missions to the United Nations in Geneva and New York, served as Egypt's ambassador to Japan (1997-1999), and later as ambassador in Washington for nine consecutive years ending in September 2008. He also chaired the Advisory Board of the UN Secretary-General on Disarmament Matters in 2001.

After leaving official service, he moved into the academic and political fields, helping to establish the Constitution Party, and working as a faculty member at the American University and as the founding dean of the School of Public Affairs there.

In July 2013, he returned to the official scene as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the transitional government of Hazem El Beblawi, suspending his party membership at that time.
