UK Plans to Tighten Granting of Permanent Residency to Immigrants

Khaberni - British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood intends to reveal new rules on Monday related to immigrants seeking to settle in the country, whereby they must secure a job, not claim benefits, and engage in community service.

Currently, those with family in the UK and who have resided there for five years have the right to permanent residency, as do those who have legally resided for ten years under any type of visa.

Those who meet these conditions also have the right to live, work, study, and receive benefits, and to British citizenship.

However, in a major shift in policy, the British Home Secretary announced on Monday that immigrants seeking to settle must contribute to social security, not claim any benefits, and have a clean criminal record.

Mahmood will outline the new rules during the annual conference of the ruling Labour Party, with the government to later consult on these amendments this year, according to a statement from the party.

This comes shortly after the announcement by the right-wing Reform Party, currently leading in the polls, that it will entirely eliminate the right to permanent residency and will require immigrants to apply for a visa every five years.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the Reform Party's plan as "racist", adding that it "will tear the country apart".

In her first speech at the conference as Home Secretary, Mahmood will emphasize that immigrants must learn English at a high level, and she will pledge to be a "firm" minister.
