Khaberni -The Spanish Ministry of Environment stated on Monday that high temperatures caused the deaths of 1180 people in the country over the past two months,
The ministry added in a statement that the data showed that the vast majority of those who died due to heatwaves were older than 65 years, and more than half of them were women.
The most affected regions were Galicia, La Rioja, Asturias, and Cantabria, all located in the northern half of the country.
Temperatures in Spain exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in recent weeks, a phenomenon also witnessed in other Western European countries.
The ministry cited data from the Carlos III Health Institute that 1180 people died due to heat-related reasons between May 16 and July 13, compared to 114 deaths recorded in the same period of 2024
