Windows 10 Remains Alive Another Year with Surprise Support Extension from Microsoft

Khaberni  - Microsoft quietly extended the Extended Security Updates program for the Windows 10 operating system until October 14, 2027, without any prior official announcement about this step, even though the updates program was originally scheduled to end on October 13 of this year.

The site "Windows Latest" noticed that Microsoft updated its information regarding the Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 to indicate that support is now extended to the coming October, and the company updated its original blog post published almost a year ago with the new information without changing the original posting date or announcing it.

According to a report published by the American tech site "TechRadar," the section relating to the deadline now states that Windows 10 support has ended, and you can enroll in the Extended Security Updates program at any time until the program ends on October 12, 2027. If you are already registered, your coverage will automatically continue until that date without any need to take further action.

This means that if you are registered for the program, you will continue to receive updates for 16 months and not just four months, as the original support end date was October 2026. It is still possible to enroll in the program if you haven't done so already.

Microsoft confirmed to the tech site "Windows Latest" that this is not a mistake in the text, and that the Extended Security Updates program indeed continues for another year, giving users of this system a welcome additional grace period to secure their devices.

Microsoft also clarified in a statement via email to the tech site CNET that this change gives customers more time and flexibility to find the best personal computer for their needs while maintaining their protection.

This program is the only way to continue receiving security fixes to protect older systems from new and future threats since the company ended its official support for Windows 10 in October 2025.

It is not clear why Microsoft did not publicly disclose this extension, but perhaps the idea is to keep the matter confidential to not discourage anyone planning to upgrade soon to Windows 11, which has been around for nearly half a decade.

However, generally, the extension of support programs is not unusual, as it often occurs due to user rejection or companies not being ready to implement, but delaying this measure seems more significant this year as upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 requires more powerful hardware, alongside a physical or software security chip known as the "Trusted Platform Module" (TPM) to operate the system.

Despite years since the launch of Windows 10, a significant segment of users has not moved to the newer system due to new hardware requirements, or because they have recently purchased used devices that do not support the upgrade.

Laptop and desktop prices are rising, driven by artificial intelligence and heavy usage of large data centers for manufacturing resources that were previously allocated for consumable components, such as memory and storage units, including sudden price increases from Apple, making this a less ideal time to purchase consumable electronics, and this situation is likely to continue throughout the next year at least.

The process of joining the Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10 is straightforward for users operating version "22H2" at least and who have a Microsoft account, as it is available via a direct link inside "Windows Update."
