Do not ignore it Vision disorders may be an indicator of health risks

Khaberni - Not all vision problems require changing glasses or using eye drops. Some common symptoms, such as double vision or reduced field of vision, may be early indicators of neurological problems related to the brain, according to specialists.

Dr. Abhijeet G. Warad, a neurosurgery consultant, explained that the relationship between the eye and the brain is very close, noting that the eye is an extension of the nervous system, and any malfunction in the pathway responsible for transmitting visual signals may manifest as vision disorders.

Warad stated, according to "Hindustan Times," that visual signals travel from the eye through the optic nerve, then the optic chiasm and visual pathways, reaching the visual cortex in the occipital lobe of the brain.

He explained that any problem affecting this pathway, whether due to a tumor, high pressure, or a vascular event, can manifest initially as a vision-related complaint.

Brain tumors may begin with eye symptoms
The neurosurgeon pointed out that vision disorders could be among the first signs of certain brain tumors, especially when these tumors affect the areas or nerves responsible for sight.

Among these tumors, the pituitary gland tumor, which is one of the most common tumors in this area and is often benign, but it can lead to gradual vision loss due to its pressure on the visual pathways, making early detection of symptoms extremely important.

He also referred to the craniopharyngioma, which can affect both children and adults and usually originates near the pituitary gland, and may be associated with vision problems and hormone production disorders.

He explained that meningiomas in the area of the Turkish saddle or above it can also affect vision, as they grow near the optic nerves and the pituitary gland, and as they increase in size, they can press on the visual pathway, causing symptoms such as blurred vision or loss of part of the visual field.

He pointed out that optic pathway gliomas are cases that directly affect the pathway of visual signal transmission from the eyes to the brain and can lead to weakness or loss of vision when the nerves responsible for them are damaged.

Early diagnosis improves treatment chances
Dr. Warad confirmed that these conditions can be treated, and that timely medical intervention can help achieve good results and recover a significant part of the lost visual ability.

He emphasized the importance of paying attention to warning signs that require a doctor's visit, among the most notable are sudden vision loss, the appearance of double vision, or a gradual change in the visual field, indicating that early handling of these symptoms can be a crucial factor in detecting neurological problems before they develop.
