A Diplomat at the Helm of the Arab League Who is Nabil Fahmy

Khaberni - The Council of the League of Arab States, on Monday, unanimously adopted the appointment of Egyptian diplomat Nabil Fahmy as the Secretary-General of the Arab League for a duration of 5 years starting from the upcoming first of July, succeeding the former Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

This occurred during the resumed ordinary 165th ministerial-level session of the Council of the League of Arab States held in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Who is Nabil Fahmy?
Nabil Fahmy is one of the most prominent Egyptian diplomats in recent decades, with a long professional career in the Egyptian diplomatic corps spanning more than three decades, during which he held several high-ranking positions at the regional and international levels.

Fahmy was born on January 5, 1951, in New York City, USA. He is the son of Ismail Fahmy, the former Egyptian Foreign Minister.

Fahmy earned a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics, followed by a master's degree in management from the American University in Cairo.

Fahmy joined the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in 1976 and progressed through several diplomatic posts, as well as participated in issues concerning international security, disarmament, and Arab and international relations.

He served as the Ambassador of Egypt to Japan between 1997 and 1999, before taking up the position of Ambassador of Egypt to the United States from 1999 to 2008, which was one of the most prominent stations in his diplomatic career.

He also worked as a political advisor to the Egyptian Foreign Minister and participated in many international conferences and negotiations, among them the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991, and issues of disarmament and international security.

In July 2013, he took over the portfolio of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, continuing in this position until June 2014, where he led Egyptian diplomacy during a significant transitional period and worked on diversifying Egypt's regional and international relations.

In addition to his diplomatic work, Fahmy founded the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo in 2009, serving as its Dean, and was recognized for his contributions in the fields of regional security, disarmament, and international relations, including some publications like “From the Heart of the Events,” and “Egyptian Diplomacy during War, Peace and Transition.”

Egyptian Welcome
Egypt welcomed the adoption by the ministerial level Council of the League of Arab States, under a mandate from the Arab leaders, the unanimous decision to appoint Fahmy as the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.

It confirmed that the choice reflects the appreciation for the diplomatic expertise that Fahmy possesses and his long professional career, which has contributed to supporting Arab action at the regional and international stages.

Egypt expressed its sincere wishes for his success in performing the duties of his new office, which contributes to further enhancing joint Arab efforts, developing coordination mechanisms and Arab cooperation, protecting Arab national security, and achieving the aspirations of the Arab peoples towards stability, development, and prosperity.

Egypt extended thanks to Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the previous Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, for his sincere efforts and continuous dedication throughout his tenure, and for his notable contributions in serving Arab causes and defending common Arab interests, and enhancing the role of the Arab League in the face of accelerating challenges in the region over the past years.
