Apple Retreats from Foldable iPad Project

Khaberni - Recent reports indicate that Apple has decided to suspend work on the foldable iPad project, after it faced challenges related to the high price and heavy weight, along with weak demand indicators for high-end devices.

High price limits spread
According to leaks, the device was expected to feature a massive screen that would reach 20 inches when unfolded, making it larger than the current iPad Pro, and closer in size to desktop computers.

But this size directly reflected on the price, as estimates indicated that the device would be launched for about $3900, making it a limited-distribution product targeting a very narrow segment of users, according to a report published by "androidheadlines" and reviewed by "Arabiya Business".

Weight exceeds expectations
In addition to the price, the weight posed a significant obstacle to the project, as the weight of the prototypes reached about 3.5 pounds (approximately 1.6 kg), which makes it heavier than some of the company’s laptops, such as the MacBook Pro.

This factor raised questions about the viability of the device as a tablet, especially since portability is considered one of the main advantages of the iPad category.

Decline in sales of the high-end category
Reports indicate that the performance of the iPad Pro series in recent years has not been at the level Apple aspires to, prompting the company to reconsider investing in high-priced devices within the same category.

Unclear future for foldable devices
Although previous rumors had suggested that the foldable iPad would be launched in 2026 before being postponed to 2029, new information suggests that the project might be either completely canceled or frozen indefinitely.

In contrast, Apple continues to work on developing other foldable devices, with the iPhone being seemingly a higher priority within the company.

Alternative plans under development
Leaks indicate that the upcoming leadership within Apple, led by John Ternus, is focusing on launching new products within different categories, with plans to unveil new “Ultra” devices by 2027.

The company is also exploring new areas, including robotics and smart displays, as part of its efforts to diversify its product portfolio.

Between ambition and realism
This step reflects Apple's approach to re-evaluating its ambitious projects based on market feasibility, especially in light of challenges related to cost and user experience.

While the foldable iPad might seem like an attractive idea, the combination of large size, high price, and heavy weight may make it more of a futuristic concept than a product ready for the current market.
