UN Refugee Agency Refugee Numbers in Jordan Decrease by 16 in Last March

Khaberni - UNHCR data recorded a decrease in the number of refugees and asylum-seekers registered in Jordan, with the number dropping to 419,950 refugees by the end of last March, compared to 426,931 refugees in February, marking a decrease of about 1.64%.

According to the data viewed by "Al-Mamlaka," 336,912 refugees, or about 80.2%, reside in urban areas, compared to 83,038 refugees, or 19.8%, in camps.

The age group 18–35 years constitutes the largest segment with 116,931 individuals, accounting for 27.8% of registered refugees and asylum-seekers, followed by the children's group 5–11 years with 90,244 individuals at 21.5%, then the age group 36–59 years with 78,468 individuals at 18.7%, while the number of children under five years reached 51,258 at 12.2%, and those aged 60 years and older numbered 17,502 at 4.2%.

The data indicates that males make up 46.5% of the total registered refugees, totaling 195,399 refugees, compared to 207,049 females at 49.3%, while the elderly constitute 4.2% of the total registered.

Syrian refugees constitute the largest percentage, at 94.4% numbering 396,640 refugees, followed by Iraqis at 12,242 or 2.9%, Yemenis at 6,105 or 1.5%, and Sudanese at 4,249 or 1%, in addition to other nationalities at limited percentages.

According to the data, 101,002 refugees, or 24.1%, need some form of protection or support, among which 58,775 suffer from serious medical conditions, and 42,937 are disabled, including children, women, and the elderly in various vulnerable situations.

The data shows that the peak was in 2013, with 110,135 refugees, while the numbers have noticeably declined in recent years, reaching only 62 refugees in 2025 and 7 refugees in 2026 as of the end of March.

Refugees in Jordan are mainly distributed in the capital, Amman, with 144,010 refugees at 34.3%, followed by Irbid with 70,361 at 16.8%, and Mafraq with 52,230 refugees at 12.4%, while Za'atari camp hosts 49,466 refugees, and Azraq camp hosts 33,419 refugees.
