Bazshkyan calls on Iranians to rationalize energy consumption

Khaberni - Iranian President Masoud Bazshkyan called on Iranians on Saturday to rationalize their electricity consumption, warning of attempts by the United States and Israel to incite "popular resentment" despite the absence of a shortage in energy supplies.

Bazshkyan said in a televised speech, "We ask our dear people, always ready and present, a simple request; to reduce their electricity and energy consumption".

He continued, "We are not asking people to make sacrifices at the moment, but we need to control consumption. Instead of running ten lights, it is necessary to operate only two lights at home, what is the problem with that".

Despite ongoing American-Israeli bombings in Iran since the outbreak of the war on February 28, the energy generating facilities in Iran have largely remained untouched. Before the ceasefire took effect on April 8, American President Donald Trump threatened to destroy Iran's energy infrastructure.

No power outages in Tehran have been recorded in recent days.

Iran often experiences frequent power outages at the peak of demand during the winter and summer seasons.

According to the International Energy Agency, Iran produces around 80% of its electricity from natural gas and is self-sufficient in this resource thanks to the abundance of its fields.

Iran also uses diesel to power old electric stations, in addition to hydroelectric plants and one nuclear station.

Due to the aging infrastructure, lack of investments, and the impact of intensified international sanctions that have deprived the country from accessing technology and investments, the electric grid is unable to meet demand during peak periods.

Bazshkyan has previously launched awareness campaigns to reduce energy consumption.
