Khaberni - We often tend to classify food according to its health benefits, but this classification is not precise, as some foods considered healthy carry hidden flaws, while others classified as "unhealthy" provide real nutritional value.
Nutritionist Kacey Morrow, clinical director at WellTheory, revealed that six foods typically labeled as "unhealthy" actually have hidden health benefits, noting that classifying foods as "good" or "bad" alone is an oversimplification that lacks accuracy.
The following are included:
Potatoes
Potatoes have gained a bad reputation due to their high carbohydrate content and high glycemic index, as well as common preparation methods like frying or topping with butter and cheese.
However, Morrow defends them, describing them as "surprisingly nutrient-dense." They contain more potassium than bananas, along with vitamin C and fiber, especially if their skins are eaten. They are naturally fat-free and very filling, which helps control appetite when baked or roasted instead of fried.
Pasta
Pasta has long been considered the main enemy of diets due to its refined carbohydrates and high calories. However, Morrow affirms that pasta can be part of a healthy diet, provided whole grain varieties are chosen. These types provide fiber, B vitamins, and sustained energy, as they are complex carbohydrates that fuel the brain and muscles. When combined with protein and vegetables, it becomes a complete and satisfying meal rather than a diet hindrance.
Cheese
Many criticize cheese for its high levels of saturated fats and sodium, which may raise blood pressure and harmful cholesterol. But cheese is in turn a concentrated source of calcium and protein, both essential for bone health and maintaining muscles. It also contains vitamin B12, and some types contain probiotics that support gut health. The trick is simply to be mindful of portion sizes and not overindulge.
Red Wine
Studies on red wine are conflicting, sometimes deemed beneficial and sometimes harmful.
While alcohol is known for its health risks, red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which offers benefits to the heart such as reducing inflammation and improving blood flow. Morrow points out there are better sources of resveratrol for those who do not drink alcohol, like mandarins, sweet potatoes, oranges, and red grapes. These foods have higher levels of resveratrol, making them excellent and safe alternatives.
Popcorn
The popcorn served in cinemas and covered with butter and salt is an unhealthy version of this snack. But Morrow explains that popcorn is essentially a whole grain, which means it provides natural fiber that supports digestion and helps with satiety.
Air-popped popcorn is low in calories and rich in nutrients, provided that butter, salt, and sugary coatings are minimized. This way, popcorn becomes a healthy, economical snack.
Dark Chocolate
Not all chocolate is created equal; milk chocolate is rich in sugar and fats and less nutritious because it contains less cocoa. Whereas dark chocolate (especially those containing 70% cocoa or more) is full of antioxidants called flavonoids, which support heart health and improve blood flow. It also satisfies the desire for sweets with less sugar than milk chocolate. Therefore, it is a smarter choice when consumed in small amounts, providing pleasure without guilt.
