Irans losses 270 billion and thousands of destroyed buildings

Khaberni - American-Israeli bombing caused destruction or damage to thousands of buildings in Iran, while Tehran estimated its direct and indirect losses at around $270 billion since the beginning of the war and until the current ceasefire took effect.

The news site «Euronews» reported on a study prepared by researchers at the University of «Oregon», stating that after more than five weeks of fighting, a 14-day ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran gave the residents of Tehran a chance to assess the extent of the destruction caused by military operations,

The city, home to about 9 million people, is weighed down by the effects of the bombing. The study, relying on satellite radar images, revealed that at least 7645 buildings across Iran suffered partial damage or complete destruction between February 28, the start of combat operations, and April 8, when the ceasefire came into effect.

The damage included 60 educational facilities and 12 health facilities. In Tehran alone, an analysis by «Bloomberg» identified damage to 2816 buildings, distributed between 32% military sites, 25% industrial facilities, 21% civilian establishments, as well as 19% commercial facilities and 2% governmental buildings.

Destruction

In this context, Nazanin Shaherkhani, a professor at the School of International Studies at Simon Fraser University, said according to «Bloomberg»: «In a city this size, the destruction does not always appear concentrated. The line between military and civilian is practically unclear, and with the strikes starting, the impact spreads across the entire urban fabric».

Heavy losses

Data indicates that vast residential areas in North Tehran suffered significant damage, with thousands of housing units destroyed, as well as vital facilities being bombed. Military operations extended to other cities, including Isfahan and Minab, causing significant human and material damage, including targeting industrial facilities and educational institutions. The Iranian government estimates the direct and indirect losses at about $270 billion, a figure close to the country's annual gross domestic product according to the International Monetary Fund's estimates for 2026.

Last Tuesday, the Iranian authorities said that the loss estimates are still preliminary, and that «the damages are usually assessed across several levels». Economic institutions also expect an inflation rate to exceed 70%, at a time when the Iranian economy is already under pressure from sanctions and slowdowns.

According to sources, more than 39,000 housing units were severely damaged since the beginning of the bombing. Alongside the strikes that affected the residential structure, military operations also covered the production, industry, and energy sectors, particularly the petrochemical sector, where damage to key facilities led to production line stops and sharp rise in the prices of raw materials, primarily plastics.

Job losses

Economic experts warn that these consequences may lead to a new wave of job losses and rising poverty rates, in a country suffering from economic frailty. Experts warn that the post-war phase could be more complicated than the war itself, amid an economic crisis and increasing domestic political polarization.
