Criminal investigation reveals involvement of ChatGPT in a shooting incident

Khaberni - The Attorney General of Florida has launched a criminal investigation against OpenAI, following allegations that the chatbot ChatGPT provided guidance that contributed to planning a mass shooting incident at Florida State University last year, which resulted in two deaths.

According to "The Washington Post", Attorney General James Outhmaier said during a press conference that the suspect received tactical advice via a "chatbot", including the type of weapon and ammunition used, as well as the effectiveness of the weapon at close range.

He added: "If there had been a real person behind the screen, they would have faced murder charges," referring to the potential dangers he described of artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, the Attorney General's office issued legal subpoenas to the company, demanding clarification of its policies regarding conversations that involve threats of violence.

In response, "OpenAI" vehemently denied these accusations, asserting that the attack is a “painful tragedy”, but emphasized that ChatGPT is not responsible for this crime.

The company explained that the system provides general information available online, without promoting or encouraging illegal activities.

This case arises at a time when there is increasing debate about the impact of artificial intelligence applications, especially with similar incidents under investigation, alongside lawsuits from families accusing these technologies of negatively affecting mental health or behavior.

Experts believe that protection systems in these applications, despite their advancement, are still not ideal, raising questions about the legal liability boundaries of the developing companies, a matter that is expected to be resolved by the courts in the coming period.
