Khaberni - In a bizarre turn of events during the Dutch Cup final, the referee answered a phone call, surprising many supporters.
AZ Alkmaar achieved a crushing 5-1 victory over NEC, claiming their fifth title in the Dutch Cup.
The referee, Danny Makkelie, moved towards the touchline, where he picked up a mobile phone and answered it before returning to the field.
"Sport Bible" noted the reaction of fans on social media to this strange incident, with one jokingly commenting: "He had to go home, the food was ready".
Another added: "Let's thank God he did not make a questionable decision afterwards; otherwise, it would have been suspicious right away," and a third wondered, "Who was the referee talking to on the phone during the match?"
However, there was an explanation for the referee's behavior, as reports revealed that the reason for answering the call was related to security concerns, as some fans had set off fireworks in the stands.
