Israel Prepares for Renewed War on Gaza and Smotrich Calls for Occupation of the Strip

Khaberni - Israeli Channel 14 revealed that the occupation army is preparing for a return to intense combat in the Gaza Strip at the beginning of next month, while the extreme right-wing Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich renewed his invitation to fully reoccupy the Gaza Strip and establish Israeli settlements there.

The private channel—affiliated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—reported that "the decision to return to war on Gaza came after Hamas announced its adherence to refusing to disarm and dismantling its military capabilities."

Smotrich stated on Sunday, "In light of Hamas's refusal to disarm, I call upon the Prime Minister to immediately order the army to prepare for a full occupation of the Gaza Strip and the imposition of Israeli control over the territories of the Strip, and to establish Israeli colonization there."

This came during the reopening he attended along with ministers and officials including Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, at the settlement of Sanur in the northern occupied West Bank, which was evacuated in 2005 as part of the "disengagement plan," according to Israeli Channel 14.

Despite the American President Donald Trump's plan that came into effect in October 2020 aimed at ending the Israeli genocide war in Gaza, Smotrich intermittently calls for the occupation of Gaza.

Hamas Demands

Earlier on Sunday, Hamas called for compelling Israel to implement the terms of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

In meetings it held with mediators and Palestinian factions—unnamed—in the Egyptian capital Cairo, it demanded the necessity of obliging the occupation to implement the terms of the first phase, to pave the way for serious dialogue on second-phase issues.

Hamas stated that the meeting was held in order to work on completing the implementation of all terms of the first phase, according to the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement which Israel did not adhere to.

The statement stressed that it dealt positively with the dialogues and discussions that took place, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to maintain contact and coordination with the mediators, to achieve an acceptable agreement in light of President Donald Trump's initiative and the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement, to end the humanitarian suffering in Gaza, the complete withdrawal of occupation forces from the Strip, and the start of the reconstruction process.

Ongoing Violations

Despite the ceasefire agreement theoretically in effect, Israel commits daily violations with bombings and shooting, resulting in martyrs and injuries.

Last Tuesday, the Government Media Office in Gaza announced that Israel committed 2400 violations of the ceasefire agreement in the sector during half a year since its inception on October 10, including killings, arrests, sieges, and starvation.

The Israeli daily violations resulted in the martyrdom of 775 Palestinians and injuries to 2171, according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry.

In mid January last year, Trump announced the commencement of the second phase within his plan approved by UN Security Council Resolution 2803 issued on November 17, 2025.

The first phase, which came into effect in October 2025, included a ceasefire and an exchange of Israeli prisoners for Palestinian prisoners.

Since the ceasefire agreement took effect, Israel has reneged on its commitments stipulated in the agreement, especially stopping military operations, in addition to introducing the agreed quantities of food, relief, medical supplies, and shelter materials, according to official Palestinian data.

The agreement was reached after two years of genocide initiated by Israel in the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2023, with American support, and continued in various forms afterward, resulting in more than 72,000 martyrs and over 172,000 wounded, and widespread destruction affecting 90% of the infrastructure.
