A building collapses on its residents in Egypt killing 3

Khaberni - The roof of a residential building collapsed on the heads of its residents in the Alexandria governorate, northern Egypt, today, Sunday, in the "Garbal" area, resulting in deaths and injuries.

In detail, the main operations room and control center of the governorate received a report about the collapse of the roof of one of the rooms on the top floor onto the ground floor in building number 19 Qubaa Street, branching from Shajarat Al Dur in the Moharam Bek area.

Rescue teams immediately began clearing the debris to rescue those trapped, and inspections revealed that the building consists of a ground floor and one upper floor, and that the roof of one of the first-floor rooms collapsed onto the ground floor. The building was issued a restoration decision number 195 for the year 2026.

The incident resulted in the death of 3 people, and 3 others were rescued and taken to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the executive authorities in the Central District imposed a security cordon around the building, and the district's engineering committee began removing dangerous parts and examining the safety of neighboring buildings. Necessary legal measures were taken.

Official estimates indicate that there are about 7,000 buildings in Alexandria posing imminent danger, mostly in the Customs, Central, and West districts.

The Egyptian authorities are dealing with the phenomenon through the "Bashayer Al Khair" projects to relocate residents of dangerous areas, and enforcing the new construction law. The legacy of old dilapidated buildings remains the biggest challenge facing the governorate.
