With the advent of spring 5 golden tips to protect yourself from ticks while hiking

Khaberni - With the arrival of spring and rising temperatures, health and entomology experts have warned of the early and strong start of the tick season, due to climate changes that have led to a longer summer and a milder winter, which aided these creatures in remaining active for longer periods, especially during the "nymph" stage, which is the most dangerous to humans.

The experts clarified to "National Geographic" magazine that ticks do not fall from trees as some believe, but rely on a behavior known as "questing," where they wait at the edges of grass and foliage to latch onto any passerby from the waist down. For this reason, they emphasized the importance of prevention during outdoor activities, as it is the first line of defense against infection.

How do you protect yourself from ticks?

The specialists pointed out that wearing appropriate clothing plays an important role in reducing risks, such as choosing light-colored garments which help easily spot ticks, wearing long sleeves, and tucking pant legs into socks to prevent them from reaching the skin.

They also recommended using insect repellent substances containing DEET, especially during long trips, in addition to treating clothes with permethrin when being in forests and natural areas.

The experts also stressed the importance of thoroughly checking the body after returning home, focusing on warm and hidden areas such as the scalp, armpits, and groin area, noting that some diseases transmitted by ticks like Lyme disease may take from 24 to 48 hours to transfer, while other diseases can transfer more quickly.

What do you do in case of a bite?

In the event of a bite, the specialists explained that the correct removal of the tick is extremely important, which is done using fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it at the closest point to the skin and pulling it out with a steady motion without shaking.

They also warned against using traditional methods such as burning the tick or applying Vaseline or nail polish, as they may increase the risk of infection transmission. After removal, the bite area must be cleaned well with alcohol or soap and water.

The experts concluded by emphasizing that early detection of ticks remains the most effective way to prevent serious health complications, especially since their bites may initially resemble bites from other insects, making careful attention crucial for maintaining health and safety during the heightened activity season.
